Ujung atap (Baeckea frutescens) is an Indonesian medicinal plant. Its wood is used to make fences and powder for rubbing medicine on stomach aches. As a medicine and herbal medicine, this plant is known as jungrahab. Ujung atap wood is used to make fences. It is said that the wood is dark red, extraordinarily hard and dense, heavy, and very durable. The leaves are used for refreshing drinks, tea, diuretics, and abortifacients. In traditional medicine, both in Malaysia and Indonesia, it is used to refresh the body of a mother who has just given birth. The crushed ujung atap leaves mixed with water are efficacious for curing aches and pains. The leaves are also useful as a rub all over the body. The leaves were traded on the Malay Peninsula during the Dutch colonial period under the name cucur atap leaves. Ujung atap flowers in traditional medicine are useful for treating appetite problems. In the Baliem Valley, it is used as a medicine for fever, stomachache, and mosquito repellent and is made into brooms. The simplicia (basic medicinal ingredient) from this plant is pharmacognosically known as Baeckea Folium (Jungrahab Leaves) and, at least in the past, was included as one of the simplicia that must be available in pharmacies. The tip of the roof smells fragrant, like lavender because it contains essential oils (pinene, g-terpinene, p-sinmonene, limonene, linalol, and others). It also contains substances (glycosides) that smell like resin. Phenol and baeckeol have been isolated from this tip of the roof plant. Ethanol extracts from the tip of the roof showed cytotoxic activity against leukemia cells in tissue. Three flavonoids found in the tip of the roof leaves, namely BF-4, BF-5, and BF-6, showed strong cytotoxic activity against leukemia cells. Baeckea frutescens is also known to have potential anti-caries properties against Streptococcus mutans. The roof tip extract showed strong anti-inhibitory activity against malaria parasites (Plasmodium falciparum) but not against babesial (Babesia gibsoni).
