BRAZILIAN RAINTREE (pithecellobium tortum)
This hardwood tree is native to Brazil and its rainforests. The rain
tree has fine branches and small, light green,
thorny compound leaves. The leaves fold up at night or in low light and rise
when we do. The flowers look like fluffy, fragrant balls of fur. The
Brazilian Raintree is a member of the legume family. The sandy
growing conditions in Brazil show how well the Raintree
tolerates dry conditions, but prefers even moisture in a
container. This tree will tolerate temperatures in the upper 30s but
not for too long. Although it grows in full sun in nature, the Brazilian
Raintree as a bonsai seems to appreciate shade during the hottest winter
days of the tropical summer. Certainly one of the most
interesting rainforest plants.
